20 Ways to Celebrate Earth Day in the US

Earth Day officially happens next Wednesday, April 25th, but cities across the United States are starting the celebrations early and continuing them all week long. Whether you’re looking to enjoy the great outdoors, learn how to become more eco-friendly, or do your part for the environment, this list has something for everyone in nearly every part of the US:


1. Washington, DC: Join Usher, No Doubt, Will.I.Am, Fall Out Boy, Mary J. Blige, and others at this all-day free event on the National Mall.


2. Raleigh, North Carolina: Visit the Planet Earth Celebration at the Museum of Natural Sciences to plant a seed and learn about composting at this free event on Saturday, April 20th.


3. Atlanta, Georgia: Visit the Atlanta Botanical Garden and create a craft in honor of Earth Day.


4. Denver, Colorado: Check out the Earth Day Fair that’s powered solely by solar energy. Food trucks will be there to offer delicious treats and you’ll learn about living more sustainably.


5. New York City, New York: Head to Prospect Park to get free fishing lessons, meet a raptor, and make instruments out of recycled materials.


6. California (multiple cities): State parks across California are looking for volunteers to help with improvement projects. With 27 parks to choose from, there’s one not too far from your California home.


7. Chicago, Illinois: At this free film showing, you’ll get to see “Just Eat It,” a documentary about food waste in America. You’ll also get tips on how to save the planet by eliminating food waste in your household.


8. Houston, Texas: Join the Houston Zoo for a “Party for the Planet” to see wildlife, participate in a scavenger hunt, and leave your mark on the coloring mural.


9. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: Runners rejoice! Philadelphia’s “Run for Clean Air” is happening on Saturday, April 18th. More than 50,000 runners are expected to participate and if you’re not a runner, there’s plenty of other activities to enjoy.


10. Jacksonville, Florida: Make crafts, visit educational booths, and endure an obstacle course at the 22nd Annual Earth Day and Ecology Fair in Jacksonville. If you’re brave enough to hold a snake, you’ll get a chance at this event.


11. Omaha, Nebraska: Climb the Nebraska State Champion swamp white oak tree at their annual Earth Day celebration and enjoy live music.


12. Dallas, Texas: Head to Fair Park in Dallas Texas to learn more about new eco-friendly technologies, tips on leading a more sustainable life, and catch a lecture from keynote speaker and actor Ed Begley, Jr.


13. Milwaukee, Wisconsin: Learn how to adopt a beach and make an impact on your favorite shoreline.


14. Nashville, Tennessee: Mayor Karl Dean wants to help make Nashville the greenest city in the Southeast and he’s doing it by helping throw a free Earth Day bash.


15. Boston, Massachusetts: Help clean up the Charles River all the way from Bellingham to Boston and afterwards enjoy a picnic.


16. Las Vegas, Nevada: Play in the kid zone, adopt a pet, and enjoy live entertainment at GREENFest in Las Vegas that’s free and open to the public.


17. Indianapolis, Indiana: Snack on local food while learning about sustainability and living green at the Earth Day Indiana Festival.


18. Columbus, Ohio: Columbus is making it easy for its residents to get involved in the community by offering an entire week of Earth Day events that make it possible for anybody to make a difference in the city while having fun.


19. Maui, Hawaii: Listen to live music while gazing out over a beautiful view at Maui’s Earth Day celebration. If you have children, be sure to check out the petting zoo and take the kids horseback riding.


20. Albuquerque, New Mexico: Enjoy four days worth of festivities in Albuquerque beginning on April 22nd. You’ll even get a discount at some events by riding your bike instead of driving.
